Summary:
Text objects automatically resize when changing appearance properties
Version:
FileMaker Pro Advanced 12.0v1 (03-15-2012)
Operating system version:
Mac OS X 10.6.8
Description of the issue:
When changing a text object's appearance by changing its background colour, font, font size or style, the text object resizes to fit the text. The severity of this depends on how the object is aligned.
If the text is vertically aligned to the top of the object, both the width and height of the object resizes to the width and height of the text. If the text is vertically aligned to the centre of the object, the width of the object resizes to the width of the text.
This happens with the classic theme and the new FileMaker 12 themes.
Steps to reproduce the problem:
1) Use the text tool to write the word "the".
2) Set the text to be left aligned and top aligned.
3) Resize the text object to 200pt wide and 200pt high.
4) Set the font style to bold.
Expected result:
The text object remains at 200pt wide and 200pt high.
Actual result:
The text object is resized to fit the text.
Workaround:
I haven't found any workaround. This is horribly unproductive as any style change resizes objects that have been positioned exactly on a layout. I have to manually resize the objects every single time I make an appearance change.
Answer
DamonCasey:
Thank you for your post.
I am able to replicate the issue on Mac OS X 10.7.3. (My Windows machine is currently unavailable, but I suspect this is also an issue).
I have sent your post along with my findings to our Development and Testing departments for review. I will keep you posted as information becomes available to me.

Cannot replicate this on my Windows Xp machine. Changing the fill color and the text style to italics did not resize the text object.
Neither did setting the layout text object to bold change its size.

All:
This only occurs under Mac OS X. As with PhilModJunk, I confirmed that this issue does not occur under Windows XP (SP3).

Thanks TSGal and PhilModJunk for looking at this on Windows. Does this mean it's a bug on Mac OS X?

Testing notified me that this inconsistency has been reported previously, and it has been sent to Development for review.
