    Title:
    Sync one way only
    Your post:

Can it be true, that Bento and it's daughter at iPod/Phone only can sync one way from the mobile to the desktop? Any Sync-Application I ever saw, gives the 3 options of Master/Slave or Slave/Master or upgrade each the other.

    Tell me:

can Bento sync both ways and where is the option for that or

can Bento not and at what time this will be bugfixed?

      Thank you for your post.

Bento will sync both ways.  If you make a change in Bento for Mac, that information is written to a change file.  Likewise, when you make a change in Bento for iPhone, that information is also written to a change file.  When you sync, the changes are written to the other platform.  For example, if I make change to record 1 on Bento for Mac, and I make a change to record 2 on Bento for iPhone, when I sync, the changes in record 1 will be written to Bento for iPhone, and the changes in record 2 will be written to Bento for Mac.

      Hello, TSGal,

so I did hope, but it does not function:

I made some changes on one bibliothek (? - I'm German): deleted a couple of wrong imports; and at sync, Bento mobile did destroy that changes and put the old version and all deleted parts back to Mac.

Then I restored on Mac, how I did before, but deleted the bibliothek from my iPod, hoping, it will be synced new – but Bento mobile did delete complete that bibliothek from my Mac.

Are there any preferences, I should change?

Or is complete or partial deleting not a change in that sense you wrote?

Is there any possibiliy to tell Bento, which direction has priority?

      Regards Hans

      Maier-Hans:

When you make a change to one Bibliothek, and then sync, those changes should be written to the other device.  If you remove a Library, then it assumes you want that removed from both devices.

When you create a new Sync (that is, tap "Sync" followed by tapping "Sync with new computer..." ), the information from the Mac will overwrite the information on the mobile device.  However, before that information is overwritten on the iPhone, the current database file from the iPhone is copied to a Backup folder in the same location as your bento.bentodb database file.  That way, if the information didn't transfer correctly, rename your bento.bentodb database file to Macbento.bentodb, take the most recent Backup file and rename it to bento.bentodb and place this in the same folder as the Macbento.bentodb.  Now, when you launch Bento for Mac, you will see your iPhone data, where you now sync again to restore it.

      Okay, TSGal,

it's a possibility that will work, I hope. But it's not so very friendly to the user.

Anyway: Thank you for help me.

      Best regards

i agree with Hans. The solution is not user friendly AND more importantly, the 'delete' result can be unexpected (as i had presumed that when there was a conflict that the desktop version would be the 'master' and trump the iPod Touch (in my case) and accidentally deleted a lot of data. I had to do sort of what you recommend --go to a backup (which i HOPED was recent enough) of the desktop version but the Library was not replaced on the ipod so i had to download a new emptly version of the library from Templates, sync that new library to the ipod and, then do a restore backup on the desktop to regain the old data-filled version of that library and, then and only then, was i able to do a sync with the ipod which accepted the data back in....

a lot of work..all because i had come to believe that the desktop would trump the iPod Touch...!!

      bingada:

Once the initial sync has been established, a "change log" file is created.  Any change (add/edit/delete) is recorded in this "change log" file.  When you tap "Sync Now" on the iOS device, the changes from the "change log" are written to the Mac, and the changes on the Mac are written back to the iOS device.  The "change log" file is then cleared out so new changes can be recorded until the next time "Sync Now" is tapped.  Keep in mind that the iOS device changes take precedence over the Mac.  That is, if a change is made on an iOS device, and the same record is changed on the Mac, when you tap "Sync Now", the data from the iOS updates the data on the Mac, and any change on that record on the Mac will be lost.  A more extreme example is if you delete a Library on the iOS device, and you make changes to that Library in Bento for Mac, when you tap "Sync Now", the deletion of that Library will delete the Library on the Mac, and since the library no longer exists on the Mac, any changes in that Library on the Mac are now lost.

Make sure you continue to keep weekly backups (Bento automatically prompts you weekly), and if you need more frequent backups, then do it manually by pulling down the File menu and selecting Back Up Bento Data.
